Virus Removal

Just what is a computer virus? There is quite a bit of confusion so here are some terms and definitions for common computer infections.

1) A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate or reproduce itself and spread from one computer to another. A true computer virus spreads from one computer to another using some form of executable code when its host is taken to the target computer; possibly over a network, the Internet, or carried on removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive. The term "computer virus" is often used as a catch-all phrase to include all types of computer infections.

2) The term Malware is short for malicious software. Malware consists of programming, in the form of code, scripts, active content, and other software that is designed to disrupt or deny operation, gather information that leads to loss of privacy or exploitation, gain unauthorized access to system resources, and other abusive activity. A computer infection is considered to be malware based on the perceived intent of its creator rather than any particular features. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, and other malicious and unwanted software or program.

3) A computer worm is a self-replicating malware computer program, that uses a computer network to send copies of itself to other computers on the network. It is capable of doing so without any user intervention due to security shortcomings on the target computer. Unlike a computer virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program.

4) A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is software that appears to be a program the user actually wants on his system. It often disguises itself as an Antivirus program amd is given a name that indicates that it is from a trusted source. Iin addition to "performing" the expected function it steals information or harms the system.

5) Ransomware is Malware with a ransom note attached. It is malicious software which will lock up your computer "until a ransom is paid." The goal is to extort money from victims and even if the money is paid your computer will remain locked requiring professional help to repair. Ransomware costs individuals and businesses millions of dollars a year plus requiring a significant amount time and labor to rebuild systems and infected data.

Those are just a few of the more common infections referred to when people use the all-encompassing term - VIRUS.
